The Advent of duanpian xiaoshuo: A Combination of Western Discourse and Chinese Legacy in the Early Definitions of the Modern Short Story

2020

During the late Qing, a thriving transcultural interaction across China and the West determined a burgeoning cultural environment in which new forms of appreciation and critique contributed to the development of a new sense of literary modernity and new ways of conceiving and classifying literature (wen) distant from the “canon”. From the mid of XX century, in Chinese newspapers and magazines literature and leisure reading became a regular section. Shenbao was also one of the first papers which recognized the attractive power of literature and of the so called duanpian xiaoshuo 短篇小說 (Chen 2009, p. 117). In those years, Shenbao introduced new contents and form of reception that were already …

From canon to chaos management: blogging as a learning tool in a modern Finnish literature course

2015

This article is based on the teaching experiment implemented in summer 2013 in a modern Finnish literature course organised by the Centre for International Mobility (CIMO) and the University of Jyvaskyla Language Centre. In order to break away from the traditional conception of literature and text, students’ independent blogging was chosen as the final course assignment instead of a traditional final project. Our aim has been to determine what blogging as an activity can add to second-language learning (i.e. learning the language in a country where it is spoken as a native language) in the context of modern Finnish literature. Our special interest is how new learning environments and approa…

Reliģiski-filozofiski raksti, Speciālizlaidums I

2022

A special issue, “Remembering the Past and the Future - Korean Culture in a Changing World,” is devoted to understanding Korean culture. Regardless of the bulk of comprehensive information available today, accurate knowledge of the Asian culture in Europe or the European culture in Asia has not become considerably deeper. Sometimes even to the contrary – the old stereotypes continue to exist as part of the packaging for pseudo information adjusted to the short-term goals of the contemporary globalised society, supplemented by travel guides and announcements tailored to the needs of immediate politically economic conjuncture. And yet, this is only the top of the intercultural communication i…

Ķīniešu identitātes meklējumu atspoguļojums Rētu literatūrā pēc Kultūras revolūcijas

2021

2018

AbstractIn this article, I study a possible case of imitation between Italian and Spanish early modern literature, concerning a novella by Girolamo Parabosco (the eleventh in his Diporti) and a play by Lope de Vega (Los esclavos libres). After comparing their plots, I will demarcate their common motifs, situations, and characters in order to determine the ways in which Lope de Vega could have imitated Parabosco. I will also examine the different editions of Parabosco’s novels that Lope could have read in creating his play, with special attention to the possibility that the playwright may have used Il primo [-terzo] volume delle novelle del Bandello nuovamente ristampato. Finally, I study th…

Self-Translation in the Northern Renaissance: Jan van der Noot’s French Verse

2020

The Brabantian poet Jan van der Noot (1539-95?) wrote in both Dutch and French, and composed several works in both languages. Sometimes the two versions were published separately: the Dutch collection Het Theatre and its French counterpart, Le Theatre, were each printed in London in 1568. More often, the versions appeared alongside each other in bilingual editions: Cort begryp der XII boeken Olympiados / Abregé des douze livres Olympiades (1579), Lofsang van Braband / Hymne de Braband (1580), and various short pieces reproduced in anthologies of Van der Noot’s poetry (1580-95). The present study contends that Van der Noot’s self-translations should be read as translations from Dutch to Fren…
